MTO staff get a little taken off the top for Cops for CancerBy Dermott BarrettPolice officers from across the province annually help raise money for the Canadian Cancer Society by collecting pledges from co-workers, friends and family, and then shaving their heads.
Ron DeMerchant from Eastern Region, and his nine-year-old son Louis, pose with their newly shaven heads after Louis raised $365 at the May Cops for Cancer event. Last March, 37 people, including employees from MTO enforcement in Durham, Peel and Halton, the Ontario Provincial Police, Durham Regional Police Service, the RCMP, Durham Region Emergency Medical Services and the Durham Region Firefighters, raised $18,715.75 by going bald for the Canadian Cancer Society. A special thanks goes to Brenda Johnston (Durham) for organizing the event, as well as Mike Jansen (Peel) and Frank Yalaska (Halton) for their assistance and dedication in making this a successful event. A second Cops for Cancer event was held in May with 20 participants from MTO Enforcement, Durham Region Police Services, Municipality of Clarington firefighters and the By-law services, which raised another $7,000. A big thank you goes out once again to Brenda Johnston for organizing the event, and to Christine Levin (Durham) for passing the hat and collecting over $500.
In March, Tyrone Greenbridge (standing, left to right), Karl Kaseloo, Mike Jansen, Mark Bonner, Dermott Barrett, Jim Gray, Kelly and Norm Mathieu (a husband and wife team that raised over $5,000), Frank Yalaska (kneeling, left to right) and Brenda Johnston helped raised over $18,000 to fight cancer. Missing from the photo are Gloria Armstrong and Ed Hartnick.
