ONTARIO TRANSPORTATION
OFFICERS SAVE LIVES
Ontario Transportation Officers
work hard to save lives. We have always known that our work saves lives, but now
a study conducted by Wayne State University Transportation Research Group,
has shown that for every 1000 inspections 0.86 lives are saved, 19.97 crashes
are avoided and 13.69 injuries are avoided.
During the last fiscal year (April 1, 2004 to March 31, 2005) we as
Transportation Officers conducted 142,538 inspections. The official Out of
Service Rate for these inspections is 41%, While the official Road Check Statistics
for 2005 showed an Out of Service rate of 19.5%. It is important to note that
Road Check is advertised in advance.
Now let's do the math:
142,538 Total inspections divided by 1000 = 142.538
Now multiply by 0.86 lives saved and that equals 122.58 lives saved.
What about vehicle crashes and injuries?
Crashes: 142.538 multiplied by 19.97 crashes = 2846.48 crashes avoided.
Injuries: 142.538 multiplied by 13.69 injuries and that = 1951.34 injuries avoided.
