National Safety Code Challenge Grand Champion MTO's Eric Vautour:

by Kristal Seupersad

Eric Vautour, Transportation Enforcement Officer, Eastern Region, is the National Safety Code (NSC) Challenge 2003 provincial Grand Champion. This is the first time Eric has won the title of Grand Champion in the five years he has competed in this provincial inspector's competition.

Eric attributes his success in this year's competition to relaxing and letting his "experience and knowledge do their job."

Grand Champion Eric Vautour will represent Ontario at this year's North American Inspectors Competition in Columbus, Ohio.

The competition tests inspection skills and knowledge developed in day-to-day enforcement activities in accordance with the National Safety Code standards and provincial legislation. The competition events are grueling and intense as the officer's inspection procedures and knowledge are scrutinized and evaluated by ministry colleagues from across the province. The competitors must accurately determine and assess the severity of pre-determined violations hidden within each inspection scenario.

While Eric admits he has succumbed to pressure in the past, he had his game plan set this time. "I found it was far more enjoyable and easier if you can simply relax and enjoy the event," he says.

It is necessary to have an incredible amount of regulatory and procedural information ready for use off the top of your head and the ability to stay focused, Eric adds.

The greatest benefit of winning the competition is returning "from the competition with more skill and confidence in the way I do my job, and the desire to put them to use on the road," he says. His best advice to those wishing to enter the NSC Challenge in the future is to avoid the temptation to put stress or pressure on yourself.

As Ontario Champion, Eric represented the province in this year's North American Inspectors Competition in Columbus, Ohio. Eric competed against the best in his profession from across North America and won third place in the Level 1 commercial and driver vehicle driver inspection.

Other NSC Challenge award recipients include Sam Hardie, Central Region, first runner-up and CVSA Inspection Awards; Todd Fullerton, Northern Region, second runner-up and Dangerous Goods Award; Mike Winegardner, Central Region, Motor Coach Award; and Bryan Card, Southwest Region, Driver Interview Award. Congratulations to all!
